You promised you'd be waiting
While I was slaying the dragon for you.
You sat there, from sobs shaking
Under a lying sky, so blue.
You stood out on the castle wall
As I rode out to fight.
But on a handsome noble's call,
As soon as I was out of sight,
You turned your back to the horizon
And found comfort in his arms.
You forgot that I was gone,
Safe from any harms.
I travelled the lands from East to West,
To slay the dragon, to win your favor,
Did not pause and did not rest
Until I knew you were safer.
I found the tower, I killed the beast.
Wounded, I rode back to you,
Bringing the head for you to feast.
I would get your hand hand now, I knew.
I rode into the castle yard,
Victory so very near.
I jumped from my horse, ground hitting hard,
And ran to you, my dear.
I found you in your chamber,
Abed with some young lordling.
Around your neck, a necklace of amber
On your finger a familiar ring.
I knew that ring, I saw it before,
Vainly I remember his word:
The woman that wears it will nevermore
Marry another man. Imagine, how that hurt.
Wheeling around I fled the room,
Sprinting down into the yard.
Looking to where the mountains loom,
Sorrow in my heart.
As dust fell I was miles away,
Wandering without a goal.
Leaving you, in dismay,
And emptiness in my soul.
You promised you'd be waiting
While I was slaying the dragon for you.
You sat there, from sobs shaking
Umder a lying sky, so blue.
